Election results

In the only election that anyone has been following this week, congratulations go to Dr Suzanne McNicol QC, who was elected by our members, from a Melbourne Cup size field, to fill a casual vacancy in the senior category on Bar Council.  The result was declared at our Bar Council meeting last night, after which Sue was warmly welcomed to her first meeting.

Proposed reforms to the Constitution of the Victorian bar

At a special meeting this week, Bar Council resolved to convene a Special General Meeting of the Victorian Bar at 5pm on Wednesday 12 June 2019 at which proposed amendments to the Constitution of the Victorian Bar will be put for the consideration of members.

Last night, the family and friends of our newest 48 members gathered to witness the March 2019 readers sign the Bar Roll in a ceremony held in the Banco Court.

Call for Nominations - Bar Council By-Election

There is a vacancy on Bar Council due to the recent appointment of the Hon Justice Jacinta Forbes to the Supreme Court of Victoria.

On Monday, there will be a formal call for nominations from members in ‘Category A’, comprising silks or junior counsel of not less than fifteen years’ standing.

Four new judicial appointments

Congratulations to four of our members who were appointed to judicial office this week:

Jacinta Forbes QC was appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court.

George Georgiou SC was appointed as a judge of the County Court.

Liz Brimer QC was appointed to the County Court.

Shiva Pillai was appointed to the Magistrates’ Court.
