Four new judicial appointments
Congratulations to four of our members who were appointed to judicial office this week:
Jacinta Forbes QC was appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court.
George Georgiou SC was appointed as a judge of the County Court.
Liz Brimer QC was appointed to the County Court.
Shiva Pillai was appointed to the Magistrates’ Court.
On behalf of the Victorian Bar, I wish them personal and professional satisfaction in their new roles.

The Supreme Court of Victoria’s innovative podcast series, ‘Gertie’s Law’, has hit the Top 10 in the Australian iTunes Charts. The series provides unique insights into Victoria’s justice system, through interviews with judges and court staff. Listen online or subscribe via your podcast app.
12th Human Rights Arts and Film Festival 9-23 May
One of our members, Evelyn Tadros, founded the Human Rights Arts and Film Festival 13 years ago and is the current Chairperson. A number of members of the Bar are involved in organising the festival, and as speakers, ambassadors and supporters.
HRAFF released its 2019 program last week, featuring a great line up of films, art and performances, including the opening night film, Damon Gameau’s 2040 (9 May), Australia Says Yes about the 2017 marriage equality campaign (15 May), Stop the Boats featuring Behrouz Boochani and Greens candidate for the seat of Kooyong, Julian Burnside AO QC (18 May), Wik v Queensland featuring Noel Pearson and Marcia Langton (19 May) and The Panama Papers (11 May). Victorian Bar News - content deadline and a caption competition
The content deadline for the June 2019 issue of Victorian Bar News is fast approaching. Members are encouraged to contribute proposed 600-800 word articles by 30 April 2019 to vbneditors.com.au.
The editors also have a caption competition for a photo sent by Caroline Paterson, depicting all the fun of the queue to get through security at the Commonwealth Law Courts.

John Snaden will be both sworn in and welcomed as a judge of the Federal Court of Australia on Monday 29 April 2019 at 9.30am.
The profession will welcome the Hon Justice Tim McEvoy to the Family Court of Australia on Tuesday, 30 April 2019 at 4:30pm.
Stewart Anderson QC will be both sworn in and welcomed as a judge of the Federal Court of Australia on Monday 6 May 2019 at 9.30am.
The profession will welcome the Hon Justice Jacinta Forbes as a judge of the Supreme Court of Victoria on Friday 10 May at 9.15am.
