Following a comprehensive review, there is to be a restructure of the Bar Office. The restructure is intended to enable the Bar Office to meet members’ requirements more effectively, improve internal governance, and strengthen delivery of the Bar’s strategic plan and objectives.

Federal Court of Australia

The Governor-General in Council on Friday 22 February 2019 appointed Angus Morkel Stewart SC, Michael Hugh O’Bryan QC and John Snaden Judges of the Federal Court of Australia to commence respectively: in the Sydney Registry of the Court on Monday 25 February 2019 (Angus Stewart QC, a member of the New South Wales Bar who is also a member of the Victorian Bar – Interstate & Overseas Practising Counsel); in the Melbourne Registry of the Court on Tuesday 26 February 2019 (Michael O’Bryan QC); and in the Melbourne Registry of the Court on Monday 29 April 2019 (John Snaden).

It is with deep regret that the Bar Council informs members of the death yesterday (Sunday 24 February 2019) of the Honourable Philip Cummins AM. Philip was 79 (born 9 November 1939).

It is with deep regret that the Bar Council informs members of the death on Wednesday 20 February 2019 of Brian Gallagher – Building Consultant, Arbitrator, and Foundation President and first Life Member of the Building Dispute Practitioners’ Society (“BDPS”). Brian was 81.

A Memorial Service will held at the Heritage Funeral Home, 733 Boronia Road, Wantirna next Friday, 1 March 2019 at 1 pm.

For his long-standing commitment to pro bono work and his extensive assistance to litigants and the courts, Michael Gronow QC was awarded the Victorian Bar Trophy for exceptional individual achievement in pro bono advocacy at the Victorian Bar 2019 Pro Bono Awards ceremony last night (Wednesday 20 February).

The awards night celebrated the significant pro bono contribution of Victorian barristers and announced the winners of the 2019 Pro Bono Awards for legal services benefitting the Australian community and legal system during 2017 and 2018.
