Media Law

The role of the media and the internet in business today is evolving and is ever-present. Whether it is through online reputation, use of social media or eCommerce, the law is constantly adapting to the new economy. Members of the Media Law Section of CommBar have special expertise in all aspects of media law and appear in court in relation to the following:

  • Defamation Act 2005 (Vic);
  • Open Courts Act 2013 (Vic);
  • The law of contempt of court;
  • Privacy Act 1988 (Cth);
  • Broadcasting Services Act 1992 (Cth);

The Media Law Section works closely with the Law Council of Australia’s Media and Communications Committee. It has contributed to making submissions to government on proposed recent legislative reforms in defamation law, the law of suppression orders and the VLRC review on contempt laws.
