Experience as a solicitor prior to coming to the Bar in 2020:
 

Coles Group Limited (2019-2020):

• WorkCover (self-insurance) role, managing the Victorian common law and statutory benefits claims across Coles Group businesses, including internal financial governance and reporting.
• Instructing Coles Group's external WorkCover legal panel and liaising with internal stakeholders to coordinate the defence of claims and obtain settlement sign-off.
• Advising and assisting the internal claims team with appropriate claim and dispute management.

Minter Ellison Lawyers (2011-2019):

• Advising insurer clients in professional indemnity and financial and banking disputes. This has included class actions arising from failed investment schemes including the collapse of the Great Southern agricultural investment scheme, and claims against land surveyors, engineers and lawyers arising from property and construction disputes.
• Acted for the former CEO and CFO of Flavoured Beverages Group Holdings Ltd (FBGHL) in the various cross claims brought against them in Federal Court proceedings issued by Asahi Holdings (Australia) Pty Ltd against the majority shareholders of FBGHL and their related parties, for alleged losses in excess of NZ$500m, allegedly suffered as a result of misleading and deceptive conduct during the due diligence process for, and in the promotion of, the sale of the shares.
• Acted for land developer, Peet & Co Casey Land Syndicate Ltd, in respect of a class action brought by residents of the Brookland Greens Estate in Cranbourne, as a result of migration of landfill gases from the adjoining landfill owned by City of Casey. The matter was the subject of an investigation by Ombudsman Victoria and involved various claims against the developer, Casey, various landfill managers and consultants, and the Environment Protection Authority, and a counterclaim by Casey for substantial remediation costs.
• Acting for the Victorian Workcover Authority, its insurer agents, and a range of Government, corporate and small business employers in respect of worker's compensation claims, including statutory benefits, common law, revocations, judicial review and appeals.  This has included proceedings at all levels of the Victorian Courts, including a successful appeal to the Court of Appeal (Spotless Facility Services P/L v Trpceva & Ors [2016] VSCA 217).
• Angus’s WorkCover experience included complex claims involving, for example, multiple concurrent claims or serious injury applications by one worker;  multiple defendants in statutory litigation and / or common law damages proceedings; disputes as to which entity is the correct employer; analysis of dual insurance issues with the Transport Accident Commission as a result of injuries arising from the use of a motor vehicle and / or from transport accidents, including analysis of the Transport Accident Act 1986 and relevant case law.

Ministry of Social Development, New Zealand (2010):

• Employed in a Contracts role within the Child, Youth and Family Department, which primarily involved drafting, checking and issuing contracts for funding to Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) providing social services to the Department.
• Also took on additional duties while in the role which were of an advisory nature and included redrafting and reworking contract templates used by the Department’s staff throughout New Zealand to contract social services with NGOs. The templates are used for high value contracts and also for contracts involving the care of children or youth justice services – accordingly, they are high profile and high risk.

Shepherd and Wedderburn LLP (2007–2009):

• As a Trainee Solicitor in Edinburgh and London, Angus’s experience included corporate restructuring and insolvency on behalf of large UK banks and insolvency practitioners, commercial leasing, construction and property disputes, and general commercial and regulatory experience.
• Angus represented utility ScottishPower in a competition law investigation by the UK regulator Ofgem, for suspected abuse of dominance in the electricity generation and balancing market.  The investigation was ultimately concluded without commencement of any infringement proceedings.
