Oliver practises in all areas of commercial and public law.
Before coming to the Bar, he practised as a solicitor at Allens in its disputes team for five years and was an Associate at the Federal Court of Australia and Australian Competition Tribunal to the Honourable Justice John Middleton AM.
Oliver has been involved in complex disputes in a variety of courts and tribunals. He has particular experience in contractual and trust disputes, class actions, insolvency, regulatory investigations and commissions of inquiry (including royal commissions), judicial review and statutory interpretation advice to government bodies.
Since coming to the Bar, Oliver has advised and appeared (led and unled) in a broad spectrum of commercial law matters, including in relation to:
- contractual warranty claims, including under business sale agreements and design and construction agreements;
- enforcement of Chinese judgments in Australia;
- property disputes under the Sale of Land Act and Retail Leases Act;
- large discretionary family trust disputes;
- contract and ACL claims in the context of goods and services disputes, including building and construction;
- loan, debt and other financial disputes;
- corporate insolvency and personal bankruptcy;
- tax issues, such as stamp duty and director penalty notices;
- employment, restraint of trade and confidentiality; and
- ASIC investigations and regulatory powers.
Oliver has also advised or appeared in relation to various public, regulatory and administrative law matters, including in relation to:
- ASIC investigations and regulatory powers;
- native title proceedings;
- migration judicial reviews; and
- statutory interpretaion advice to government bodies.
