Shakti practises primarily in general commercial and public law matters, with a focus on administrative law, contractual and corporations law, insolvency law, banking and finance regulation, and regulatory actions. She also has an interest in quasi-criminal matters involving the exercise of power by statutory authorities and officeholders.
Prior to coming to the Bar, Shakti was a Senior Legal Adviser in the Public Law and Litigation team at the Victorian Department of Justice and Community Safety. In that role, she provided advice and acted in litigation in the areas of constitutional, public, and administrative law. She has also practised as a solicitor in the commercial disputes and insolvency team at Mills Oakley, working on disputes involving insolvency and debt recovery, proceeds of crime, and regulatory actions. Shakti also worked as a Legal Consultant at the World Bank, in the Finance, Competitiveness and Innovation Global Practice. In that capacity, she provided advice to member states in relation to financial sector regulation.
Shakti was an associate to the Honourable Justice Woodward. She assisted his Honour with a wide range of commercial matters, including building and construction disputes (such as the claim in relation to the fire caused by combustible cladding at the Lacrosse tower) and professional negligence claims.
Shakti holds an undergraduate degree in arts from St Xavier’s College at the University of Mumbai, and a Juris Doctor from the University of Melbourne. She won a number of academic awards while completing her law degree. She has tutored public law, legal theory and trusts at the University of Melbourne, and evidence at Deakin University. She is currently a sessional lecturer at Deakin Law School.
