Damien Hannan has a wealth of experience in all aspects of the criminal law. In the 23+ years of practice as a barrister he has conducted over 250 criminal trials in the County Court in matters of fraud, drug trafficking, sexual offences, assaults and robberies as well as County Court appeals for all matters, including driving matters and traffic offences. Damien regularly appears for clients in inquests, committal hearings, contested summary hearings, bail applications, plea hearings, contest mentions and mentions in the Magistrates' Court. He has appeared in a number of significant and complex criminal matters for both the Prosecution and Defence in the County and Supreme Court as well as the Supreme Court of Appeal.
In 2016 Damien was appointed an Examiner with the Office of Chief Examiner (Vic) , an independant statutory appointment for a period of 5 years. He is the first and only sessional appointment to such a position. His appointment recognised his expertise in criminal law and advocacy skills, and his experience in this regard is considered valuable to his practice as both a prosecutor and defence counsel.
Damien is briefed by solicitors to advise, to draft submissions and to appear in criminal matters in all jurisdictions for prosecuting agencies and defendants.
Damien has also lectured and tutored at the Gummuri Centre, Griffith University and at Deakin University in contract law, employment law, ethics and administrative law.
