Vale – David Munro RFD

David commenced his secondary education at Box Hill Grammar School (now Kingswood College), but left school early and worked full time as an insurance clerk.  He completed his secondary education at night school and gained admission to the University of Melbourne where he became an enthusiastic member of Queens College. He graduated with a degree in Law and did his articles with Lander & Rogers.

David came to the Bar in 1971 and read with Peter Rendit (later His Honour Judge Rendit QC). He mentored one reader, Alan Sandbach RFD.

He established a busy practice in Workers Compensation and then Common Law. Widely known as “The Major” (even after his promotion in the Army to Lieutenant-Colonel), he cut a dashing figure in those jurisdictions. David was a larger than life personality with a great sense of fun, but also a thorough and skilful advocate with a keen tactical sense.

David served on the Human Rights committee of the Bar, and also the Equality before the Law committee. He was extraordinarily generous with his time and talents, and undertook much pro bono work, including difficult work for war crime victims of the Bosnian War of the 1990s.

David joined 2 Commando Company in the Army Reserve at a very early age and served in numerous Army Reserve postings thereafter, including as commander of the Deakin University Company, until compulsory retirement from the Army. He attained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel and was awarded the Reserve Forces Decoration for his long and efficient service to the Army. His service was notable for the enthusiasm, energy, and generous spirit that he brought to all his endeavours in life. 

Following his retirement in 2008 David developed his artistic skills. The Essoign Club mounted a memorable exhibition of his paintings of Gallipoli in April 2019.

David was immensely devoted to his family; his wife, Helen, and children, Jane, Duncan and Cameron and to his grandchildren. He will be greatly missed.
