New policies introduced for workplace harassment, bullying and discrimination

The Victorian Bar has launched a revised code of conduct for its members.

New policies have been introduced for barristers concerning sexual harassment, bullying and discrimination.

Tuesday evening witnessed the very successful launch of the Bar’s Revised Code of Conduct comprising policies against sexual harassment, workplace bullying and discrimination. Well over 200 people attended the on-line launch.

Nomination forms and the process for nominating for election to Bar Council will remain the same as in 2020, as members of the Bar and staff are not able to attend chambers in person due to COVID-19. For this reason, we are unable to accept forms in hard copy. There will be separate interactive PDF nomination forms for candidates and their nominators. A call for nominations for election to the 2021-2022 Bar Council will be emailed on Wednesday, 6 October 2021 to members of counsel eligible to nominate and be nominated, containing the forms, and including instructions on completing the forms.

The Supreme Court of Victoria

Victorian Bar member Ms Elizabeth Jane Tueno has been appointed as a Judicial Registrar of the Supreme Court of Victoria.

The appointment is effective today.

I am delighted to announce that the Victorian Bar in conjunction with the Mental Health Foundation of Australia will host a (virtual) symposium on mental health for legal practitioners as part of Mental Health Month.

The symposium will be conducted entirely remotely and will be broadcast via zoom (without charge) to a national audience. To be held on the morning of Wednesday, 6 October, it will feature a highly qualified and interesting line-up of presenters.

The Bar Council is seeking nominations for one (1) appointment to the LCA Business and Human Rights Committee (BHRC).

The Law Council’s Business and Human Rights Committee was established by the Executive in September 2014. It was formed to develop a policy focus in the emerging field of business and human rights law, consider how the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (the Guiding Principles) can be implemented by Australian law firms, and raise awareness about the Guiding Principles for the legal profession.

The Governor in Council has appointed five new Magistrates, including three members of our Bar, His Honour Magistrate Lawrence, Her Honour Magistrate Hollingworth and Her Honour Magistrate Lynch.

In recognition of Bar members’ dedication to pro bono work, the Bar is again calling for nominations for the biennial Victorian Bar Pro Bono Awards.

Members of the Victorian Bar donate thousands of hours of their time to a wide range of humanitarian and social causes.

Victorian Bar President, Christopher Blanden QC, said the awards recognised the outstanding pro bono work undertaken by members.

Family Property List Mediator Referral Scheme protocol

I was delighted this week to sign, on behalf of the Bar, the Victorian Bar/Family Property List Mediator Referral Scheme protocol. This scheme is a cooperative initiative of the Victorian Bar and the County Court of Victoria. The scheme’s main purpose is to enable the Court to refer matters to mediation by barristers who are Nationally Accredited Mediators.

It is with deep regret that the Bar Council informs members of the death of the Honourable Frank Saccardo QC on 16 September 2021. 

Frank was born on 24 March 1955. Frank’s parents immigrated to Australia from Italy shortly before the outbreak of the Second World War. Frank’s education was initially undertaken at St Patrick’s College in East Melbourne. In year 8, when the closure of that school was announced, Frank transferred to Xavier College, Kew, where he completed the balance of his education.
