Hume Students set the bar high in Legal Studies

Hume City’s top Year 11 Legal Studies students have been recognised with the Victorian Bar Foundation’s Student Achievement Awards, as part of the Victorian Bar Foundation Student Award & Mentoring Program.

Hume Mayor Geoff Porter said that it was outstanding to see the bright young minds of our community come together and celebrate their academic excellence in Legal Studies.

“There are many dedicated and promising students in Hume City; it was fantastic to see them recognised for all of their hard work in Legal Studies,” Cr Porter said.

“The Victorian Bar Foundation and the Victorian Bar are very proud to co-host and present these student awards with Hume City Council as part of the inaugural Victorian Bar Foundation Student Award & Mentoring Program,” Dr Matt Collins QC, President of the Victorian Bar said.

“The aim of the Victorian Bar Foundation Student Award & Mentoring Program is to encourage our best students to think about a career in the law, and to demonstrate that the Victorian Bar is open to all on merit, irrespective of socio-economic circumstances, ethnic background, religious affiliation, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity or disability,” Dr Collins said.
 

To be eligible for the awards, students had to be enrolled in a secondary college in Hume City, have the highest grades in Units 1&2 of Legal studies, be enrolled for units 3&4 and demonstrate consistent academic excellence in Year 11.

“All of the recipients demonstrated positive values, including respect, collaboration, and willingness to engage, skills everyone interested in a career in law must have,” Cr Porter said.

“These students will be future leaders, thinkers and workers of our community; we are so proud of everything they have achieved”.

The recipients of the awards received a certificate recognising their excellent academic performance in legal studies, mentoring from the Victorian Bar Foundation, will be invited to attend a performance at the Melbourne Recital Centre and were awarded $1,500 to financially support their future; this included $500 from Hume City Council and $1000 from the Victorian Bar Foundation.

“On behalf of Council, I would like to thank the Victorian Bar Foundation which will also provide mentoring to award recipients,” Cr Porter said.

“The Victorian Bar Foundation’s Student Achievement Awards are important in helping students who are passionate about Legal Studies to get insights into how the legal profession works and start developing a successful career path.

“We want all students within Hume City to thrive and are sure that the recipients of these awards will go on to excel in their studies and future careers.”
