Victorian Bar Media Release - Victorian Bar concerned by attacks on Family Court judges

5Jun2018

The Victorian Bar welcomes public debate on the merits of the Federal Government’s proposed restructure of the Family and Federal Circuit Courts, but is concerned about recent media reports undermining the integrity of judges within the affected courts.

“The objectives of the proposed reform are the creation of a single point of entry to the justice system for family law disputes, streamlining processes, and reducing complexity, delay and costs”, said Dr Matt Collins QC, President of the Victorian Bar. “Each of those objectives is to be welcomed, as is a debate on the merits of the reforms. There is, however, no room for ill-founded attacks on the integrity of Australia’s hardworking judicial officers”, said Dr Collins.
