Vale Jacqui Katsivas

Bar Roll No: 5061

It is with deep regret the Bar Council informs members that on 30 March 2021 Jacqui Katsivas passed away from breast cancer.

Before coming to the Bar in 2018, Jacqui worked as an insurance lawyer for Meridian Lawyers in Brisbane and Melbourne. Jacqui was a brilliant insurance lawyer. She knew all the case law and understood the quirks of insurance contracts.

Jacqui grew up in Adelaide and obtained a Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Media at Adelaide University, graduating in 2008.

Jacqui was a bright spark of our Bar, who quickly became popular with members of her Readers group, her chambers colleagues in Ninian Stephen and Owen Dixon West Chambers, her clerk, the silks she worked with and her opponents.

At the Bar, Jacqui read with Georgina Costello. Jacqui quickly became busy in common law, insurance law and public law matters. For example, she acted for a successful client in a judicial review case regarding apprehended bias in the Federal Court and brought her considerable insurance law expertise to many written advices. Her clerk John Dever enthusiastically supported her, making sure she made the most of the limited time she had as a barrister.

Jacqui had a great sense of humour and created fun and joy around her. She was a keen researcher about the latest in fine dining and knew where to buy the best croissants. She sang in a choir. She grew a jungle of delicious fruit and vegetables in her backyard and brought in bunches of rhubarb, citrus fruits and other things from her garden to share with chambers colleagues. When she arrived in Ninian Stephen Chambers she brought a huge jar of lollies that she repeatedly replenished with all sorts of sugary temptations after her mentor ate them all.

Her loss at such a young age is deeply felt by her colleagues at the Bar, her beloved husband Nigel Garson and her many friends and loving family.

The funeral service for Jacqui Katsivas will be on Sunday 18th April 2021, at 11am at Overnewton Castle in Keilor (http://www.overnewtoncastle.com.au/) with light refreshments amongst the estate gardens. The service will also be live streamed and recorded for those who cannot attend in person. Babies, children, and families are very welcome. Please contact Nigel Garson ngarson@gmail.com for details about the live streaming.
