Vale Dan Christie

15Apr2021

Bar Roll No: 3040

It is with deep regret the Bar Council informs members that on 14 April 2021, Dan Christie passed away from cancer.

Dan was born on 26 September 1966 and attended Yarra Valley Grammar School, where his father was Vice Principal. He was an excellent student and attended Melbourne University from 1985 to 1989, graduating with degrees in Law and Commerce. For much of his time at University he lived at Queen’s College, where he made many friends and was a full participant in college activities representing Queen’s in Football and Cricket and loving the social side of university life. He also played football for University Blues in the VAFA.

He did articles at the firm then known as Gadens Ridgeway and remained at that firm for a year post articles before he moved to Purves Clarke Richards where he met Kate, with whom he had three children, two boys now aged 21 and 19 and a daughter aged 16.

He came to the Bar in 1996 and was one of many who read with Tim North QC. He quickly established a busy practice in the commercial sphere, as well as a strong insurance practice. With a larger-than-life personality, he had many friends at the Bar and was in the middle of many memorable stories. Dan was a resident of Isaacs Chambers throughout his time at the Bar and his sense of fun made him a popular member of chambers. Dan had a fine legal mind, an outstanding work ethic, and a confident courtroom presence.

He was diagnosed with cancer in early 2020. Dan’s email updates to his friends and family throughout his illness captured the best of him – warm, funny, informative, open, and moving. He will be sadly missed.

Deepest sympathies are extended to Dan’s family and friends.
