Vale — The Honourable Paul Desmond Finn

It is with deep regret that the Victorian Bar informs members of the death of the Honourable Paul Desmond Finn.

Paul held Bachelor of Arts and Law degrees (Queensland), a Master of Laws (London) and a PhD (Cambridge). He followed his father, Desmond, and his stepfather, the Honourable C.D Sheahan (later a judge of the Supreme Court of Queensland), into the law. Paul was admitted to the Bar in Queensland and his brother, John Sheahan KC, is a member of the Sydney Bar.

Paul was appointed to the Federal Court of Australia in 1995 whilst a Professor at the Research School for Social Sciences at the Australian National University. He was well known for his ground-breaking work on fiduciary obligations. He retired from the Federal Court in 2012.

A Memorial service for Paul will be held at Drill Hall Gallery, Australian National University, Kingsley Street, Acton, ACT, Friday, 10 November 2023 from 4:30pm.

Addresses will commence at 5:00pm to be given by the Honourable Justice Stephen Gageler AC, Professor Tim Bonyhady and Wilfred Finn.
