Vale – Christopher Dane QC

19Jan2022

Bar Roll No: 1057

It is with deep regret that the Bar Council informs members of the death of P. Christopher Dane QC on Friday 7 January 2022 aged 75.

Christopher was schooled at Melbourne Grammar and studied law in the first intake of students at Monash University. He was then Associate to The Honourable Douglas Menzies.

Admitted in 1971 he signed the bar roll in 1973 reading with Mr Neil H. M. Forsyth. Between 1983 and 1990 he formally mentored six readers. Christopher informally mentored many more, always making himself available to members of the Bar and solicitors who would seek his counsel on strategy, dealing with the Courts and with opponents. In 1990 he was appointed silk.

Throughout his nearly 50 years at the Bar Christopher was actively involved in the Bar Council, committees and later the Criminal Bar Association. He took much pride in his continuous membership of List M also serving as Chair.

In addition to his lifelong dedication to the criminal law Christopher’s passion was rowing. From his schoolboy days to his distinguished coaching career at Olympic and World Championship level his service to the rowing community was extraordinary and exemplary.

His unerring devotion to the Melbourne Football Club cannot be overlooked nor his exhilaration at last year’s victory.

Covid-19 robbed Christopher of his love of travel, but he was not left wanting having always kept Ithaka firmly in his mind.

Christopher was a fierce and fearless advocate who was called upon on many occasions to defend the unpopular and maligned. He did so with great courage, gusto and wit.

He is survived by his three children Edwina, Alexandra and Charles.

Private funeral. Memorial details will be advised.
