Obituary — Francis (Frank) Dyett

The legal community mourns the death of his Honour Judge Francis (Frank) Dyett, a distinguished figure renowned for his exemplary service and unwavering commitment to justice.

His Honour’s illustrious career spanned several decades.  He joined the Victorian Bar on 3 February 1958 reading with the Honourable Sir Kevin Anderson.

On October 24, 1978, he was appointed to the County Court, serving for 26 years until his retirement in 2005. His Honour was widely respected as a diligent and wise judge who was a delight to appear before.

Beyond the court room, his Honour served on various committees such as the County Court Standing Committee, Legal Aid Committee, and Improvement of Personal Injuries Jurisdiction Committee and as a mentor to many, including the Honourable Justice Timothy Hinchliffe, Robert Gorey, and Peter Luke. His colleagues have described him as a thoughtful and patient man who put the welfare of those around him at the forefront.

A known enthusiast of all things sport related, his Honour regularly enjoyed participating in sporting events such as football in his Xavier College days, being a master on the golf course and the historical achievement of managing the Bar Team for the Bi-Centennial Run in 1987.

The Victorian Bar and legal community bids farewell to a mentor, and an exemplar of legal excellence. He will be missed by family and friends alike.
