COUNTY COURT OF VICTORIA

The Governor in Council has appointed Arushan Pillay as a Judge of the County Court of Victoria.

A welcome ceremony will be held at 9.15am on Friday 16 August at the County Court.

Judge Pillay was educated at the University of Tasmania and admitted to practise in 1996. He was called to the Victorian Bar in 2003 where he read with Dr Kristine Hanscombe SC and Dr David Neal SC.

At the bar, Judge Pillay mainly practised in the occupational health and safety, administrative law and personal injuries fields. He mentored two readers, Andrea de Souza and Ben House.

Judge Pillay contributed to the Bar as a member of the Legal Assistance Committee, the Pro Bono Committee and the Race, Ethnicity and Cultural Diversity Working Group. Earlier this year, Judge Pillay was appointed as a Bar representative on the Law Aid Trust.

At the 2016 Pro Bono Awards, Judge Pillay was nominated, together with Megan Fitzgerald, for their work on the inquest into the death of Numan Haider.

He is the co-author of the editorial Cultural intelligence at the Bar in the current edition of Victorian Bar News.
