Women In Afghanistan

The Women Leading the Conversation series is a series of discussions which aims to amplify the voices of women involved in some of the most important issues currently facing the profession and the community.

The first webinar in the series is Women In Afghanistan. Our panellists Azadah Raz Mohammad and Farkhondeh Akbari with moderator, Jessie Taylor, Barrister, will discuss some of the complex issues facing Afghanistan today, with a particular focus on women, the role and future of law and international diplomacy.

PANELLISTS: 

Azadah Raz Mohammad is a PhD candidate at the University of Melbourne. Azadah will explain the various groups within Afghanistan. Azadah will also provide insights on the past, present and future state of the legal system in Afghanistan, with a particular emphasis of the role of women.

Farkhondeh Akbari is a PhD candidate at the Australian National University, researching on peace settlements with non-state armed actors, the Taliban in Afghanistan and the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia. Farkhondeh will share her insights on the role of diplomacy and humanitarian law in Afghanistan. 

MODERATOR:

Jessie Taylor is a Barrister and former President of the Victorian Council for Civil Liberties (Liberty Victoria)(2016 – 2019). She is the co-creator of the documentary Between the Devil and The Deep Blue Sea which examines the question of what drives a person to seek asylum by boat. She has a long-standing interest in Afghanistan and the Afghan diaspora in Australia.
