The Victorian Bar’s Indigenous Justice Committee and Human Rights Committee jointly invite you to this CPD on the proposed amendments to the Australian Constitution.

This seminar will cover matters of constitutional law and access to justice arising from the Australian Government’s proposal to enshrine in the Constitution an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice to Parliament and the Executive, which will be voted on in a referendum.  The issues to be addressed include:

• how the proposed Constitutional amendment is connected to the principles of representative government,    responsible government, and equality; and

• how the proposed amendment relates to First Peoples’ access to justice.

SPEAKERS:             

Professor Cheryl Saunders AO

Professor Cheryl Saunders AO is a Laureate Professor Emeritus at Melbourne Law School and co-convenor of the Constitution Transformation Network. She works in the fields of comparative constitutional law and comparative public law. She is a President Emeritus of the International Association of Constitutional Law and a former President of the International Association for Centres of Federal Studies. She is a senior technical advisor to the Constitution Building Program of International IDEA and a former Board Member of International IDEA.                         

Dr Eddie Cubillo

Dr Eddie Cubillo is the Director of the Indigenous Law and Justice Hub and Associate-Dean of Indigenous Programs at the Melbourne Law School. He recently completed his PhD on the self-determination of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Legal Services. Dr Cubillo is a descendant of the Larrakia, Wadjigan and Central Arrente peoples with strong family links throughout the Northern Territory.
