In June 2015, Opposition politicians were arrested following a protest outside the Nauruan Parliament. A Magistrate sentenced them to prison terms which the Supreme Court increased on appeal.   The politicians sought to appeal to the final appellate court, the High Court of Australia. By then abolishing its treaty with Australia, which engages the High Court jurisdiction, the Government has denied their jailed opponents their right of appeal.  The Hon Geoff Eames, who was Chief Justice of Nauru from 2010 to 2014 will share his observations of the operation of the rule of law in this troubled country.
