LGBTIQ Law Reform: General Update

12Jul2022

The Victorian Parliament has recently enacted legislation designed to provide for greater protections for members of the LGBTIQ community. Two significant reforms are:

  • the Change or Suppression (Conversion) Practices Prohibition Act 2021 (Vic), which creates a statutory offence regime for engaging in practices designed to change or suppress a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity.
  • the Equal Opportunity (Religious Exceptions) Amendment Act 2021 (Vic), which amended the Equal Opportunity Act 2010 (Vic) to protect LGBTIQ Victorians working within religious organisations and schools from being discriminated against on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity.

The LGBTIQ Working Group of the Equality and Diversity Committee is proud to present a panel discussion from expert barristers about these and other recent initiatives, with insightful commentary on potential future litigation trends.
