Cyber risk – presentation on cyber insurance for barristers

9Nov2023

Recent high profile cyber attacks have highlighted vulnerabilities in this area, including for barristers. Cyber risk is an emerging business risk for the legal services industry. The nature of legal practice requires barristers to hold confidential and other sensitive information. That makes lawyers a target of cybercriminals. This year, the Legal Services Board identified Cyber Risk as the number one risk to the legal profession.

Barristers’ existing professional indemnity insurance will not cover first-party costs and defence costs for any regulatory investigation or prosecution.  The Insurance Committee has identified Brooklyn Underwriters/AXA, who have put together an insurance cover offering for barristers. While the Committee encourages barristers to conduct their own research and they may choose another insurer, the Brooklyn/AXA offering will be presented as an option for barristers.

The seminar will address the nature and extent of the cyber risks to the work tasks of barristers, how cyber insurance works from an underwriting perspective, and how claims are managed.
