10Sep2020

This CPD will examine the findings and themes arising from Amelia Loughland’s much discussed empirical study, published in the Melbourne University Law Review in 2020, on interruption behaviour during oral argument in the High Court of Australia.  An advance copy of this article, Female Judges, Interrupted: A Study of Interruption Behaviour during Oral Argument in the High Court of Australia, can be accessed here

Amelia Loughland will present the findings of her research. The panel, comprised of members from the Bench, Bar and solicitor’s profession, will share their observations on the themes arising from the study, including the impact of gendered conversational norms and power dynamics on oral advocacy, and the role of unconscious bias in advocacy and litigation.
