Michael Shand has practised at the Bar since 1980 in general commercial law, corporations law, insurance, professional negligence, administrative law, charity and church law and equity and trust matters.
He was appointed Queen's Counsel in 1997.
He has practised extensively in corporations law including opposed winding up applications, oppression claims, company administration and schemes of arrangement.
He has also practised in the area of public superannuation law and has extensive experience in wills and trusts and property law.
He is a chartered arbitrator and a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. He is a past President of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (Australia) Limited (2005-6), a past Chairman of the Victorian Bar Council (2006-7) and past Chancellor of the Anglican Dioceses of Ballarat (2004 - 2010) and Melbourne (2007 - 2020).
