Amanda’s principal practice areas are commercial, consumer, regulatory, insurance, retail leasing, insolvency and dispute resolution.
Prior to coming to the Bar, Amanda practiced as a solicitor for 13 years in the areas of consumer law, consumer credit law, banking and finance law, bankruptcy and corporate insolvency. Immediately prior to joining the Bar, she was the Director of Legal Practice for the Consumer Action Law Centre.
Since coming to the Bar, Amanda has been regularly briefed to advise and appear in trials and appeals, both led and unled. Recent matters in which Amanda has appeared include:
- Australian Securities and Investments Commission -v- Westpac Banking Corporation [2023] FCA - civil penalty proceeding under National Consumer Credit Protection Act and National Credit Code (ongoing, led by Cam Truong KC) (concise statement)
- Certain Underwriters at Llyod's of London Subscribing to Policy Number B1294HSGBGH152448 v Dhillon Scaffolding Pty Ltd [2022] VSCA 92 - successful appeal of the proper construction of a public liability policy (led by Peter Cawthorn KC). Special leave to the High Court refused.
- O'Neill v Filip [2022] VCC 1697 - debt due under loan agreement secured by mortgage and construction of interest payable (led by Peter Fary KC)
- Warsame v API Enterprises Pty Ltd (Building and Property) [2022] VCAT 1018 - landlord entitled to repossession against tenant under a retail lease (unled)
- Koutoumanos v Du Chateau Chun Pty Ltd (Civil Claims) [2023] VCAT 525 - application for summary dismissal under s 75 VCAT Act (unled)
Amanda holds a Masters in Law from the University of Melbourne, specialising in commercial law. Amanda has a long and proud history of assisting vulnerable clients access justice. Amanda is a director of Southside Justice (formerly St Kilda Legal Service) and is a member of the Victorian Bar Pro Bono Committee.
