James practises in employment and industrial law. He also accepts briefs in criminal and commercial law.
James has particular expertise in advising employees, employers and industrial organisations on unfair dismissal and general protections applications, discrimination claims, construction of employment contracts and enterprise agreements, restraints of trade, confidential information disputes, regulatory proceedings and workplace investigations.
James has appeared unled in matters before the Federal Court, the Victorian Supreme Court and Court of Appeal, the County Court, the Fair Work Commission and the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal.
Prior to joining the Bar, James worked at a boutique law firm specialising in employment law. Before that, James was Senior Associate to the Honourable Justice Redlich in the Court of Appeal, Victoria.
James also worked for Criminal Law Policy at the Department of Justice. He has experience with coronial inquests and investigations, having served as Associate to the State Coroner of Victoria, Judge Coate.
Outside of the law, James has a Masters Degree in history and has published in leading journals in Australia and Europe.
