Catherine practises in criminal law, inquests, commissions and quasi-criminal matters. She has experience as an advocate in both state and commonwealth criminal matters. Her practice includes advising and appearing for clients at trial and appeal.
Catherine has appeared in the Supreme, County and Magistrates’ Courts. She appears as an advocate in pleas, bail applications, committals, summary hearings and jury trials. Her criminal practice includes complex terrorism, drug trafficking and importation, fraud and slavery prosecutions.
She has extensive experince in inquests, appearing as both counsel assisiting the coroner and representing interested parties. Catherine was counsel assisting in the inquests into the deaths of Tanya Day, Taniela Ahokava, Robert Love and Yucel Arslan. She is currently counsel assisting in the inquests into the deaths of Sisto Malaspina and Hassan Khalif Shire Ali, and the inquest into the death of Veronica Nelson. She represented a number of Victoria Police members in the Bourke St inquest, and represented the Department of Defence and Department of Veterans Affairs in the inquest into the death of Jesse Bird.
Catherine appears for and advises law enforcement agencies and government departments in relation to subpoenas, suppression orders and claims of public interest immunity. She appears in proceedings where issues arise in relation to protected information. Catherine appeared for the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions at the Royal Commision into the Management of Police Informants. She recently represented the Australian Federal Police in a number of Federal Court applications for interim control orders for convicted terrorist offenders.
Prior to joining the Bar, Catherine was a Senior Federal Prosecutor at the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions. She began her career in 2004 as a solicitor at the NSW Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions. From 2007- 2014 she was a State Prosecutor at the Director of Public Prosecutions for Western Australia, where she appeared as counsel without a leader in jury trials. During that time she was seconded to the Coroner’s Court of Western Australia as counsel assisting, resulting in a permanent appointment to that role in 2014 where she appeared in numerous inquests.
