Winnie practices in commercial and administrative law, specialising in taxation.
Before coming to the Bar, Winnie was a Senior Associate in Clayton Utz’s taxation practice and has advised on various federal and state tax disputes.
She has advised on a number of complex income tax issues involving individual and corporate tax residency, application of double tax treaties, capital gains tax (CGT) rules for individuals, trusts and companies, application of Division 7A and the general anti-avoidance rules. She has also advised on goods and services tax (GST), stamp duty, payroll tax, the research and development tax incentive (R&D), customs and superannuation regulatory matters. She has successfully assisted her clients navigate disputes with various government bodies including the Australian Taxation Office (ATO), State Revenue Offices in various states, AusIndustry, Customs and the Foreign Investment Review Board (FIRB).
Winnie has also advised on various commercial and corporations law matters in her practice as a solicitor, including professional negligence claims, contractual disputes, directors’ duties and foreign investment matters.
Winnie started her career at the ATO, acting for the Commissioner of Taxation in a range of federal tax matters at the Federal Court and the Administrative Appeals Tribunal. She also spent a number of years as a solicitor at PricewaterhouseCoopers, where she practiced in taxation litigation and advised on some of Australia’s largest and most complex taxation matters.
She graduated with a Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Melbourne and is currently undertaking her Masters of Law. She is a sessional tutor at Monash University where she teaches both in taxation and commercial law.
She is also a director of Foreign Investment Advisory Australia.
