Festive Choral Evensong 6 pm at St Paul’s Anglican Cathedral, preceded by a Champagne Afternoon Tea in the Barbara Darling Room at 4:30pm.  

Monday 30 January 2017 in Melbourne
Multi-Faith - Government House at 10 am with morning tea to follow hosted by The Honourable Linda Dessau AM, Governor of Victoria.

Red Mass - St Patrick’s Cathedral at 9 am followed by morning tea with His Grace Archbishop Hart.

International Commission of Jurists Community Opening - Waldron Hall in the County Court of Victoria at 9 am for 9:30am start with morning tea at 10:30 am.

Tuesday 31 January 2017 in Melbourne

Eastern Orthodox Service - St Eustathios Greek Orthodox Church at 9am - procession assembles 8:45am; followed by morning tea with Their Graces Bishop Ezekiel and Bishop lakovos.

Synagogue Service - The East Melbourne Synagogue (The East Melbourne Hebrew Congreation) at 9am - procession assembles at 8:45am; followed by morning tea.

Media Release: LIV and Vic Bar condemn attack on lawyers’ integrity

The Law Institute of Victoria and the Victorian Bar are deeply concerned by recent comments by the Minister for Families and Children Jenny Mikakos that lawyers acting for children detained in the Grevillea Unit of Barwon Prison had placed their own concerns ahead of their clients’ best interests.

Appointment - Judge of the Federal Court of Australia, David O'Callaghan QC

On Thursday 8 December 2016, the Governor-General in Council appointed David John O’Callaghan QC a Judge of the Federal Court of Australia effective Wednesday 1 February 2017. His Honour will be sworn-in privately on 1 February 2017.

The profession will extend a Welcome at a ceremonial sitting of the Full Court in Court 1 of the Federal Court of Australia on Level 8 of the Owen Dixon Commonwealth Law Courts Building, 305 William Street, Melbourne on Friday 10 February 2017 at 9:30am.

All counsel who are able to do so are asked to attend, robed (wigs are not worn in the Federal Court).

Obituary & Service - The Honourable Adrian Allfree Smithers

[14 Dec 2016]

It is with deep regret that the Bar Council informs members of the death yesterday, 12 December 2016, of The Honourable Adrian Allfree Smithers. Adrian was 82 (born 14 April 1934).

His Funeral Service is at the Trinity College Chapel, Royal Parade, Parkville this Friday, 16 December 2016 at 10.30am (limited parking).

Appointment - Anthony John Kelly QC

The Governor-General in Council yesterday appointed Anthony John Kelly QC a Judge of the Federal Circuit Court of Australia effective Monday 6 February 2017.

Media Release: Victorian Bar supports Chief Justice’s comments on Judges upholding sentencing laws

The Victorian Bar notes with concern recent media reports on the mandatory minimum sentencing laws introduced in Victoria in 2013.

The Chief Justice of Victoria, The Hon Marilyn Warren AC, has provided the attached opinion piece in response to an article – “Courts defy minimum terms” (The Age, 3 December 2016) - in which Her Honour explains the courts’ application of sentencing laws.

The Victorian Bar supports the comments of the Chief Justice and in particular her emphasis that “…the courts are interpreting and applying the laws as they were made and passed by the Parliament.”

Appointment - Judge of the Land and Environment Court of New South Wales - Simon Molesworth AO QC

The Governor of New South Wales yesterday appointed Professor Simon Richard Molesworth AO, QC an Acting Judge of the Land and Environment Court of New South Wales from 23 January 2017 to 31 December 2017, covering the leave of absence from the Court of The Honourable Justice Rachel Ann Pepper.

The Land and Environment Court of New South Wales is a Superior Court of Record and its Judges have the same rank, title, status and precedence as a Judge of the Supreme Court of New South Wales.

Appointments - the Hon Justice Susan Mary Kiefel AC and the Hon Justice James Joshua Edelman

The Governor-General in Council today appointed the Honourable Justice Susan Mary Kiefel AC Chief Justice of the High Court of Australia and the Honourable Justice James Joshua Edelman a Justice of the High Court of Australia, each effective 30 January 2017 upon the retirement of the Honourable Chief Justice Robert Shenton French AC effective at midnight on 29 January 2017.

Julian McMahon wins LCA 2016 President’s Medal

Congratulations to  Victorian Bar member Julian McMahon, who has won the Law Council of Australia’s 2016 President’s Medal. The medal is awarded to ‘an outstanding example to the Australian legal profession’ who has ‘brought credit to the profession through a commitment to the law which has been both personal and professional’.

Obituary - His Honour Timothy Mark Holt

It is with deep regret that the Bar Council informs members of the death last week on 15 November 2016 of Retired County Court Judge, Timothy Mark Holt. He was 70 (born 30 May 1946).

Service arrangements will be advised as soon as they are known.

Ceremonial Sittings for New Silks 2016

[24 Nov 2016]

Ceremonial Sittings to receive the announcements of the appointment of Senior Counsel in and for the state of Victoria will be held on Friday 2 December 2016.

  • Supreme Court of Victoria - 9.15am. A Full Court of the Supreme Court of Victoria will sit in the Banco Court, 210 William Street, Melbourne at 9.15am. The ceremonial sitting will be followed by morning tea in the Supreme Court Library.
  • Federal Court of Australia - 10.30am. A Full Court of the Federal Court of Australia will sit in Court 1, Level 8 of the Owen Dixon Commonwealth Law Courts Building, 305 William Street, Melbourne at 10.30am.
  • Family Court of Australia - 10.45am. A Full Court of the Family Court of Australia will sit in Court 4A, Level 4 of the Owen Dixon Commonwealth Law Courts Building, 305 William Street, Melbourne at 10.45am
