Michael Crennan S.C. Retires from the Bar on 30 June 2006

Michael Crennan S.C. has decided to retire from the Bar as of 30 June 2006.  Michael signed the Bar Roll on 18 November 1982 and he took silk on 28 November 2000.  He was a member of the Bar Council and Chairman of the Counsel Committee between 2002 to 2005. 
In addition to his Bar Council commitments, he was also a director of the Law Council of Australia Holdings Limited between 2003 and 2005, a conciliator for sexual harassment and vilification under the Practice Rules, a member of the Essoign Standing Committee Advisory Panel and a member of the Bar Council portfolios for Costs, Federal Courts and Industrial Law, Pro Bono Law and Property Law.
During his time at the Bar, Michael has made substantial contributions to many Bar submissions and, in particular, most recently, he represented the Bar at many meetings on the drafting of the Legal Profession Act 2004.

On behalf of the Bar, I wish Michael a long and satisfying retirement and thank him for all of the work he has done for the Bar over the years.

Obituary - His Honour Judge Bill Morgan-Payler

It is with deep regret that the Bar Council informs members of the Bar of the death of a County Court Judge, His Honour Bill Morgan-Payler QC, on Saturday 10 June 2006.  His Honour was admitted to practise in December 1972 and signed the Roll of Counsel in December 1974.  He had served as a Crown Prosecutor since 1994 and became Chief Crown Prosecutor in 2002.  In 2004 he was appointed to the County Court.

Brian Shaw QC retires from the Bar

Brian Shaw QC has decided to retire from the Bar as from 28 April 2006.  Brian signed the Bar Roll on 3 April 1959 and he took silk on 12 November 1974.  He was Chairman of the Bar Council between 1981 and 1983 yet he has always been a true leader of the Bar, both intellectually and by example, maintaining the traditions of the independent Bar.   Brian has had a formidable and distinguished career at the Bar.   

On behalf of the Bar, I wish Brian a long and satisfying retirement.  The Bar, the legal profession and the Bench will miss him.

A Professional Standards Scheme for the Bar

The Bar Council has resolved, subject to one proviso, to proceed with an application to the Professional Standards Council for approval of a Scheme. Membership of the Scheme will be voluntary. The proviso is that the Bar will only proceed to lodge the application if not less than 80 members apply for membership of the proposed scheme.
