Victorian Bar congratulates The Honourable Justice Anne Ferguson on her appointment as Chief Justice

The Victorian Bar extends its congratulations to the Honourable Justice Anne Ferguson on her appointment as the next Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, effective from 2 October 2017.

Justice Ferguson served as a Judge of the Supreme Court from 2010, sitting predominantly in the Corporations List. In 2014, Her Honour was elevated to the Court of Appeal.

Victorian Bar President, Jennifer Batrouney QC, said ‘The Bar welcomes the appointment of Justice Ferguson as the 12th Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.  Her Honour is widely respected by her colleagues on the bench and is held in high regard by the Bar.’

Justice Ferguson was educated at the Brigidine Sisters’ Killester College in Springvale where she was academic Dux. She studied Arts and Law at Monash University, winning the Supreme Court Prize as the top student in her graduating class.

Her Honour served Articles at J M Smith & Emmerton and was admitted to practice in 1984. In 1989, she graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy in Law from the University of Southhampton. Her Honour returned to partnership at J M Smith & Emmerton and later went on to become a Partner at Allens Arthur Robinson (now Allens Linklaters).

Her Honour practised as a solicitor for over 25 years, specialising in insolvency and general commercial litigation managing large scale and complex cases.

‘As a Trial Judge and a Judge of Appeal Justice Ferguson has excelled and is acknowledged by the profession as a judicial officer of the highest intellect.

The Bar congratulates Her Honour on her appointment and wishes her long, distinguished and satisfying service as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of this State,’ said Ms Batrouney QC.
