Peter Kidd S.C. - Appointed Chief Judge of the County Court of Victoria

The Victorian Bar President, James Peters QC, congratulates Peter Kidd S.C. on his appointment as Chief Judge of the County Court of Victoria.

The Governor in Council made the appointment today, to commence on Monday 28 September 2015.

Peter Barrington Kidd graduated Bachelor of Laws from the University of Adelaide in 1988. He served Articles at the firm Mallesons Stephen Jacques (the firm that is now King & Wood Mallesons) in Melbourne and was admitted to practice in Victoria on 2 April 1990.

He remained withe Mallesons as an employee solicitor in commerical litigation for a little over a year - from his admission in April 1990 to June 1991.

He then made the shift from Commercial to Criminal Law, becoming a solicitor in the Office of the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions.

After a little over 4 years with the Commonwealth, he came to the Victorian Bar in the September 1995 Readers Course. He read with Damien Maguire.

He took study leave overseas and completed the Master of Laws degree in Humanitarian Law & Human Rights at the University of Geneva.

In September 2005, he was appointed an International Prosecutor in the War Crimes Chamber of the Federal Court of Bosnia Herzegovina.

He returned to Melbourne and resumed practice at the Victorian Bar in November 2008.

On 30 January 2009 he was appointed a Senior Crown Prosecutor; and on 22 November 2011, he was appointed Senior Counsel.

Peter Kidd S.C. has practised as a barrister for a total of approaching 20 years, of those, just short of 4 years as Senior Counsel.

"His varied experience in the commercial litigation department of a major national law firm; as a solicitor with the Commonwealth DPP; at the Victorian Bar; as an International Prosecutor; and as a Senior Crown Prosecutor - all make him an outstanding appointment as Chief Judge" Mr Peters said.
