Obituary - Frederick Gordon Tinney

24Jul2019

Bar Roll No: 673

It is with deep regret that the Bar Council informs members of the death of Frederick (Fred) Gordon Tinney, who passed away on Wednesday 24 July 2019 aged 88.

Fred obtained his LLB from Melbourne University.  Following his admission in 1954, he returned to his hometown of Ballarat where he became a partner of the firm Nevett, Glenn and Tinney.

He came to the Bar in 1962 and read with His Honour Judge JH Forrest AO.  He  developed a substantial and successful common law practice. He also served as counsel assisting a number of royal commissions.

In April 1976 he was appointed a Prosecutor for the Queen.  He retired from the Bar in 1982.  He is remembered as a robust, formidable, but always scrupulously fair, opponent.

The Bar extends deepest sympathies to Fred’s wife Phyllis and to his four sons, who include the Honourable Justice Andrew James Tinney (Supreme Court of Victoria) and His Honour Judge Michael Tinney (County Court of Victoria).

Fred’s family has informed the Bar of his explicit wish not have a funeral or service.
