Obituary - Christopher Smale

14Jun2019

Bar Roll no: 2425

It is with deep regret that the Bar Council informs members of the death of Christopher Stewart Smale. Christopher passed away on Tuesday, aged 73.

A Funeral and Memorial Celebration will mark Chris’ great enthusiasm for life at the Glen Eira Town Hall Auditorium on Wednesday August 7th 2019 at 2.00pm (doors open at 1.30 pm)

Come to the main entrance on Glen Eira Road, near the corner of Hawthorn Road, Caulfield.

The Auditorium is on the first floor, and a lift for those who need it can be found on the left.

The Town Hall carpark is not available, so be sure to allow good time for parking in surrounding streets. You will need a 2-hour spot.  Parking in this area can be tricky.

Following the Memorial, please join the family for refreshments at the Smale home at 222 Poath Road, Hughesdale (about 15 minutes from the Glen Eira Town Hall).

Christopher was born on 1 June 1946.

He was admitted to practice in 1977 and worked as an administrative officer in the Victorian Public Service; a management consultant; a legal officer; a ministerial adviser and a policy officer.

He came to the Bar in 1989 and read with Robert Stanley Osborn (later a justice of the Supreme Court of Victoria and Court of Appeal).

At the Bar, Christopher practised in administrative law, commercial law, criminal law, and industrial relations/employment law.

His family and wide circle of friends and colleagues remember him as a person who stood for justice, compassion and good fun.

Deepest sympathies are extended to Christopher’s family, including his wife Dr Suzanne Dean, two children and granddaughter.
