Appointment - Richard Niall QC

The Governor in Council has appointed Richard Michael Niall QC Solicitor-General for the State of Victoria.

Richard Niall graduated Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws from Monash University. He served Articles with John Cavanagh at the firm Purves Clarke Richards and was admitted to practice on 4 April 1991. He remained with the firm as an employee solicitor until, in January 1992, he was appointed Judicial Research Officer for the Judges of the County Court. In March 1993, he became Associate to the Honourable Justice Donnell Ryan of the Federal Court of Australia. He read with Kevin Bell (now Justice Bell) and signed the Bar Roll on 25 May 1995. He had 10 Readers.  He took Silk on 25 November 2010. He has practised at the Bar for more than 20 years. His principal areas of practice have been administrative law, revenue law, discrimination, employment and industrial law, and human rights law. He served for some years on the Bar Equal Opportunity Committee; has represented the Bar on various Court Committees (the Federal Court Migration List Users Committee and the Supreme Court Judicial Review & Appeals Users Group); has served on the Bar Pro Bono Committee; and has chaired the Commercial Bar Association Public Law Section.
