Challenging DNA evidence

14May2020

The days of having DNA evidence dismissed from court on the grounds of possible contamination are long gone.  The technical and procedural changes that have occured in forensic laboratories across Australia in the last five years have resulted in far more complex issues that should be explored by lawyers to ensure miscarriages of justice do not occur.

This presentation will aid both prosecutors and defenders to understand what the forensic DNA laboratory looks like in 2020.  It will also tackle the statistics behind the DNA match, how to spot bias in the interpretation of the findings, and look at the questions you should be asking to test the DNA evidence relied upon.
