Profile:
Matthew is an experienced criminal defence counsel.
He is currently a doctoral candidate at the University of Oxford, where he is examining requirements for transparency, inclusivity, and good faith in negotiations concerning UN human rights resolutions. His focus is upon resolutions that address the question of the death penalty.
Matthew was one of Australia's civil society representatives to the UN Human Rights Council in 2019.
He was elected as President of the World Coalition Against the Death Penalty in 2021, and re-elected to the role in 2023. The World Coalition is the peak representative body for anti-death penalty advocacy worldwide, headquartered in Paris.
He is a Senior Fellow at Monash University Law Faculty's Eleos Justice initiative, and a board member of the Capital Punishment Justice Project (formerly Reprieve Australia).
