PILCH Walk for Justice

Join PILCH (the Public Interest Law Clearing House Victoria) and its patrons at 7:30 am on the steps of Parliament House on 17 May 2010 for the third Annual Walk for Justice, which will be led this year by the Honourable Chris Maxwell, President of the Court of Appeal.

Obituary: The Hon. Sir Edward Woodward, AC, OBE, QC

It is with deep regret that the Bar Council informs members of the death on 15 April 2010 of the Honourable Sir Edward Woodward. Sir Edward was 81.

A memorial celebration was held at Wilson Hall, The University of Melbourne, Parkville on Thursday 22 April 2010.

The legal profession will extend a welcome to her Honour on Tuesday 4 May 2010 at 9.15 am in the Banco Court, Supreme Court of Victoria.

‘Legal Aid Matters’: Rally TOMORROW, Wednesday 28 April, 9.15am, County Court Forecourt

Many barristers have first-hand knowledge about the current crisis in legal aid funding, and about its social consequences. This rally – organised by the Victorian Bar, the Law Institute of Victoria, PILCH and Women’s Legal Service Victoria – is part of an access to justice campaign spear-headed by the Law Council of Australia to draw attention to the crisis and lobby for an adequately funded legal aid system.

Speakers will include Former Chief Justice of the Family Court Alastair Nicholson; Robert Richter QC; VCOSS CEO Cath Smith and LIV President Elect Caroline Counsel.

Date: Wednesday 28 April
Time: 9.15am – 10am
Venue: Forecourt, County Court, corner William and Lonsdale Streets

All members of the Bar are asked to attend, robed. This is a critical matter for the entire Bar and its success will be determined by the numbers attending.

Please also remember to write to your local MP asking them to invest more in Legal Aid, to work with the States/Territories to achieve a fairer system and to ensure broad access to justice for all.
