Welcome – The Honourable Justice Lex Lasry to the Supreme Court of Victoria

A welcome will be extended by the legal profession for the Honourable Justice Lex Lasry on his appointment as a Judge of the Supreme Court of Victoria. The welcome will be held on Wednesday 31 October 2007 at 9.15 am in the Banco Court, Supreme Court of Victoria.
 
All counsel who are able to attend are requested to do so, robed.

Justice Lasry is a former Chair, Vice-Chair and Secretary of the Victorian Criminal Bar Association and this year was awarded the inaugural President's medal by the Law Council of Australia for his contribution to the law.

Results of Bar Council Election for 2007/2008

At the Declaration of the Poll following the Bar Council election on 19 September 2007 these candidates, in order of seniority, were declared elected.

At the Bar Council meeting on 27 September these Bar Councillors were appointed to the Executive Committee.

ABA Residential Advocacy Course

The Australian Bar Association’s highly acclaimed Residential Advocacy Course will be held in Sydney on 21-25 January 2008 at the Macquarie Graduate School of Management. Modelled on the demanding and intensive advocacy training offered each year by the South Eastern Circuit Bar at Keble College, Oxford, this course provides participants with a valuable opportunity to gain intensive, practical advocacy instruction.

There will be places for 42 barristers in the Sydney course, with a coaching faculty comprised of 21 senior Australian and overseas advocates, including Edwin Glasgow QC from the United Kingdom. The course has been designed for barristers with at least two years seniority at the Bar.

The registration fee for the 2008 course will be $3,000 (inc. GST), which includes accommodation, food and drinks.

Positions are reserved for barristers from each state and territory, with ten spots for those from Victoria. If, by 31 August, the reserved positions have not been taken, then they will be allocated to other Australian barristers who have registered their interest on a first-in basis.

Magistrates’ Court of Victoria Practice Direction No. 6 of 2007 - Mediation Pilot Programme

From 1 October 2007, the Court will commence a mediation pilot programme at the Magistrates’ Court at Broadmeadows for all defended civil disputes where the amount sought in the complaint is less than $10,000 or where the dispute is under the Associations Incorporation Act 1981 (irrespective of the amount or matter in dispute).

The Legal Services Board Grants Program

Grants of up to $50,000 will be available for projects aimed at improving Victoria’s legal system under a program launched on September 20 2007 by Deputy Premier and Attorney-General Rob Hulls.
The Legal Services Board Grants Program will fund projects aimed at improving laws and legal services, enhancing access to justice, and better informing consumers of legal services

Monash Centre for Regulatory Studies Intensive Regulatory Studies unit

Monash Centre for Regulatory Studies runs postgraduate courses in regulatory studies aimed at practitioners and academics working in, or who are interested in, regulation, compliance and law.
