Legal Services Board Elections

Under the Legal Profession Act 2004, the Legal Services Board (LSB) must hold its next elections by 31 May. To take part in the elections, practitioners must be enrolled with the LSB. If you are not enrolled, or you are uncertain as to your status on the roll, fill in the enrolment form and return it to the LSB. No date has been set for the first election of the LSB. Practitioners can use the enrolment form to enrol at any time. You can download a copy of the form here:

Magistrates’ Court Judicial Registrars

The Magistrates’ Court (Judicial Registrars and Court Rules) Act 2005 creates the office of judicial registrar.  Ms Angela Soldani and Mr Barry Johnstone have been appointed judicial registrars and commenced their duties on 22 March 2006.  For more information about the nature and duties of the office see the attached document.

Attorney-General's Review of Legal Education Services

A review of legal education and training regulation and services relating to the requirements for admission to practice and to current programs of post-admission continuing legal education has now commenced.

The review is being conducted by Ms Susan Campbell, formerly Professorial Fellow in Legal Practice at Monash University, assisted by an Advisory Committee whose members are able to contribute national, educational and professional perspectives and experience.

The new Advisory Committee comprises:
Mr George Beaton (Beaton Consulting)
Mr John Cain, Victorian Government Solicitor (Designate)
Professor George Hampel (Monash)
Professor Ainslie Lamb (University of Wollongong)
Mr Michael Lavarch (Queensland University of Technology)

Ms Campbell will be consulting as widely as possible in the Victorian profession and is keen to receive submissions and opinions from individuals as well as interest groups.

The Bar will be lodging a detailed submission. 

Farewell for the Honourable Justice Stephen Charles

A farewell will be extended to the Honourable Justice Stephen Charles on the occasion of his retirement as a Judge of the Supreme Court of Victoria, effective as of Friday 21 April 2006.  The farewell will be held on Thursday 6 April at 4.30pm in the Banco Court, Supreme Court of Victoria. 

International Bar Association scholarship opportunities

The International Bar Association (IBA) is offering several scholarship opportunities throughout 2006 allowing deserving young lawyers to attend IBA conferences, including The World Woman Lawyers Conference Scholarship - see attached scholarship form for information.

The European Forum will also be offering scholarships for their conference which will be held in Brussels from 11 - 13 June 2006. Further information and an application form will be available soon at this web address.

The Law Council has joined forces with a coalition of unions, lawyers and medical practitioners to launch a campaign aimed at restoring fairness to Tasmania’s workers’ compensation laws.

Annual General Meeting of the Commercial Bar Association

The Annual General Meeting of the Commercial Bar Association will be held on 14 March 2006, in the Neil Forsyth Room, Level 1, Owen Dixon Chambers East, at 5:15 PM.

Supreme Court Redevelopment - Plans available

The Department of Justice has released interim concept drawings for redevelopment and total integration of the Supreme Court facility. A series of views and drawings have been made public and are available for inspection on the Supreme Court's website - link.  See concept drawings

Supporting Commonwealth Games Athletes and Officials: Victorian Bar Pro Bono Scheme

The Victorian Bar has established a pro bono scheme that will provide representation to athletes and officials during the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne in March 2006.

It is anticipated that representation might occur either in the courts, or before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). The scheme has been approved by the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee and both Victoria Police and Melbourne Magistrates’ Court are aware of its existence. A group of counsel has volunteered to support the scheme through the month of March.

This training, offered by the Human Rights Law Resource Centre Ltd, is intended for workers, volunteers and pro bono legal practitioners at community legal centres, law firms, community organisations and human rights organisations with an interest in using international human rights law in litigation, advocacy and campaigning.
