The Bar Council is the governing body of The
Victorian Bar Inc. and manages and administers its business
and affairs. It meets every three weeks and its Executive Committee
meets every three weeks.
The Bar Council has three broad goals:
| (a) |
To maintain professional standards and discipline.
The Bar Council for example makes rulings on matters of ethics and etiquette and is responsible, (in general, through its Ethics Committee) for enforcing all rules by which barristers are bound. |
| (b) |
To represent the common interests of members of the Bar. It manages a range of issues affecting the day to day practice of barristers including accommodation, clerking and fees. It represents and acts for the Bar in its relations with others. |
| (c) |
To represent the public interest. |
It addresses issues affecting the administration of justice
and the maintenance of the rule of law and places at the disposal
of the community its special skills and knowledge about relevant
issues.
