Elections
The Bar Council is elected annually by members of the Bar
whose names are included in either Part I (the
Practising List) or Part II (Crown
Prosecutors and Public Defenders) of Division A of
the Bar roll and who are otherwise eligible to vote.
The election of the Bar Council is governed by clause 10 of
the Bar Constitution.
Twenty-one candidates are elected in the following categories:
- 11 members who are either Queen's Counsel, Senior Counsel
or junior counsel who are of not less than 15 years' standing;
- 6 Junior counsel who are of not more than 15 nor less
than 6 years' standing; and
- 4 Junior counsel who are of less than 6 years' standing.
Once the members of the Bar Council are elected the Bar
Council appoints the following office bearers:
- Chairman;
- Senior Vice-Chairman;
- Junior Vice-Chairman;
- Honorary Treasurer;
- Assistant Honorary Treasurer;
- Honorary Secretary; and
- Assistant Honorary Secretary.
