Federal Court of Australia - Admiralty and Maritime Law Seminar The Federal Court of Australia will hold an Admiralty and Maritime Law Seminar on 9 November 2010 from 5.15pm until 7.00pm (AEDT). The topics that will be discussed at the seminar include: 'Is it time to consider reform of the Admiralty Act 1988' and 'Demystifying the Personal Property Securities Act 2009 in Admiralty Law'. As of Wednesday 1 September 2010, all Practice Court matters will be heard in Court 7. Court 7 will remain as the Practice Court until further notice.

Federal Election results – Mark Dreyfus QC and Adam Bandt Two members of the Victorian Bar were elected as members of the House of Representatives during the Federal Election on 21 August 2010. Mark Dreyfus QC has been re-elected as Federal Member for the seat of Isaacs, having been first elected in 2007. Adam Bandt was elected as Federal Member for the seat of Melbourne.

Female advocates in Australian courts - LCA survey results The LCA is consulting with its constituent bodies regarding the attached Strategy for Advancing Appearances by Female Advocates in Australian Courts, which addresses the findings of the 2009 Court Appearance Survey.

The Bar will be submitting a coordinated response to meet the deadline of 1 September 2010. If you want to comment, please email Denise Bennett by Tuesday 24 August.

ABA Advanced Advocacy Course The Australian Bar Association’s fifth Advanced Advocacy Course is being held in Melbourne from 17 – 21 January 2011. This is a course run by the profession for the profession. At least two years experience at the Independent Bar is a pre-requisite. The course is particularly suited to senior juniors who wish to hone their skills with the benefit of comments from coaches who include Supreme Court Justices, Australian and International Senior Counsel, and expert performance coaches.

Judicial appointments review The Department of Justice is currently reviewing the way prospective judicial officers are identified, assessed and appointed. A discussion paper setting out the issues and options for reform has been released by the Attorney-General for community consultation. The Bushfire Legal Help Response’ ‘The Bushfire Legal Help Response’ is a joint report prepared on behalf of the Victorian Bar and other consortium members of Bushfire Legal Help (BLH). The report contains recommendations arising out of the BLH experience in the aftermath of the 2009 Victorian bushfires.
