Charles practises in commercial law and constitutional law.

Prior to coming to the Bar, Charles was Associate to Justice Hayne of the High Court of Australia and a solicitor in the litigation group at Freehills. Cases in which he was involved at Freehills included Coles Supermarkets Australia Pty Ltd v FKP Ltd [2008] FCA 54 and Puttick v Tenon Ltd [2008] HCA 54.

Charles studied law at the University of Melbourne and completed a doctorate at the University of Oxford on a Commonwealth Scholarship.

He currently lectures in property law in the Faculty of Law at the University of Melbourne. He has written numerous journal articles and is the author of Sir William Stawell and the Victorian Constitution (Australian Scholarly Publishing, 2004) and Bills of Rights and Decolonization (Oxford University Press, 2007).
