To make application to become a member of the Victorian Bar you are required in first instance, to be admitted to practice as an Australian lawyer. Please refer to the website of the Supreme Court of Victoria and specifically the area under Board of Examiners\Overseas Applications.
The Application to Sign the Roll of Counsel can be downloaded from the Bar’s website under COMING TO THE BAR. You will be required to complete the form and lodge with a deposit of $903 made payable by cheque to The Victorian Bar Inc. noting that under the Application (Amendment) Regulations 2006 “A person is not eligible to lodge an Application Form under these regulations unless he or she is an Australian Lawyer within the meaning of the Legal Profession Act 2004 or expects on reasonable grounds to become an Australian Lawyer within one year after lodging the Form.”
Please note that the earliest intake of the Readers Course with positions currently vacant is March 2012. Should you wish to have your name listed for standby to commence reading in an earlier intake, please include a covering note with your application, clearly nominating which particular intake/s you wish to be on standby for, in the instance that a vacancy will arise.
